A piece of twisted steel
recovered from the site of the World Trade
Center disaster was picked up from John F.
Kennedy Airport Wednesday and delivered via an
official escort of Auxiliary Police and Fire
Department vehicles to West Hempstead. It will
be used in a future memorial to the 12 West
Hempstead residents and others who lost their
lives in the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
After touring the Lakeview
and West Hempstead communities, the steel
finally came to its new temporary home at
Chestnut Street School, where it will wait while
the memorial it's to be a part of is
constructed.
